Allendale, Mich. – A little over eight hours after
winning its second consecutive GLIAC Tournament title, the Grand Valley State baseball team earned the No. 2 seed for the NCAA Midwest Regional, which will be held on the campus of Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Missouri. The No. 13 Lakers will face fifth-seeded Drury, the two-time defending GLVC Tournament champions, to open regional play on Thursday (May 14).
Quincy, ranked No. 22 in the latest NCBWA poll, earned the region's top seed and will face sixth-seeded Ashland in the opening round. The No. 3 seed went to William Jewell, while the No. 4 seed was awarded to Truman State. Those two clubs will square off on Thursday.
GVSU will be making its 14
th consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance—the second-longest active streak, and the fifth-longest run in Division II history. The Lakers boast a 45-32 all-time record in their 16 trips to the NCAA Tournament. Under third-year head coach
Jamie Detillion, GVSU is 9-5 in the NCAA Tournament, including a Division II World Series appearance in 2013.
Arguably the two hottest teams heading into the Midwest Regional, GVSU and Drury have seen quite a bit of each other over the past two seasons.
In last year's NCAA Tournament, the Panthers knocked out the Lakers in the regional semifinals. Earlier this season, GVSU split a pair of 7-inning matchups with Drury during its 10-game stint in Florida.
