Four Grand Valley State men's golfers finished in the top-10 at this weekend's Kent County Amateur Championship, including soon-to-be junior
Alex Scott winning the tournament with an impressive 54-hole score of 208 (-8) and a two-stroke victory.
Bryce Messner,
Mitchell White, and
Owen Rush rounded out the top-10 of the amateur competition, played at L.E. Kaufman Golf Course in Grand Rapids.
Scott was one of just three golfers in the tournament to shoot under par during all three rounds, with 18 holes played on Saturday (July 15) and 36 holes of competition on Sunday (July 16). After Saturday's opening round of a 68 (-4), Scott was in third place - two strokes behind White, his sophomore classmate. White opened with a 66 (-6), tied with Nigel Hawryliw for the best individual round of the competition and a first place tie after day one.
In Sunday's first round, Scott stayed under par with a 70 (-2), just one shot back of the best opening round of the day. He then stayed remarkably consistent with another 70 (-2), just one of four players to stay under par over the final 18 holes. His overall tally of 68-70-70 for a 208 (-8) was two shots better than Hawryliw (210, -6) and a few shots in front of Joshua Gibson (211, -5) and Tom Werkmeister (212, -4). There were just six golfers to finish under par during the 54-hole tournament.
The competition featured 205 golfers, with all four Lakers placing in the top-10.Â
Messner - who will be a junior at GVSU in the fall - tied for eighth place with a 217 (+1), as he shot 71-72-74 in the two-day competition. After White's initial 66 on Saturday, he followed up with a 71 and a 81 for a 218 (+2) and a ninth place tally. Rush, who just finished his freshman year in Allendale, went 71-75-73 to tie for 10th place with a 219 (+3).
All four Lakers will return to Grand Valley State in the fall and attempt to defend the program's 2017 GLIAC Championship. The team's 2017-18 campaign begins on Sept. 9-10 at the Al Watrous Invitational in Bay City.
