Grand Valley State women's golfers continued to make a name for themselves at the 101st Michigan Women's Amateur Championship at Saginaw Country Club on Thursday (July 13), as soon-to-be sophomore
Katie Chipman advanced to the semifinal round of match play at the tournament. An All-GLIAC First Team selection during her freshman year at GVSU, Chipman edged out Laker teammate
Mackenzie Blomberg by a result of 1 Up to win their quarterfinal matchup on Thursday and advance to Friday's semifinal round.
While Chipman was able to move on as one of the final four golfers at the tournament, Blomberg still has one of the top highlights of the week, as the recent Laker sophomore aced the 145-yard 10th hole during Wednesday's round of match play. That enabled Blomberg to advance to the round of 16, where - as the 21-seed - she upset fifth seed Nichole Cox by a score of 5 & 4.
Chipman was matched up with Blomberg in the quarterfinals after defeating future Grand Valley State teammate Olivia Reed by a result of 2 & 1 in the round of 16 earlier on Wednesday. She then narrowly held off Blomberg to move onto the semifinals, which will be played on Friday. The championship round will be also take place on Friday afternoon.
Interestingly enough, Chipman will face Aya Johnson, a senior at Wisconsin, in the semifinal round. Chipman and Johnson tied for third place in the 36-hole qualifying stage, as both golfers shot a 146 (+4) over the opening two days. Johnson earned the 3-seed and Chipman entered match play as the 4-seed.
The other semifinal features Sarah White - a junior at Texas State - and Anika Dy - a junior at Traverse City West, who defeated her sister Anci in the quarterfinals. Dy is the 2-seed in match play, while White is the 8-seed and upset top-seeded Kerrigan Parks in the semifinal round.
