Grand Valley State had a strong showing at the 101st Michigan Women's Amateur Championship at Saginaw Country Club on Monday and Tuesday (July 10-11). Four women's golfers - three current and one future Laker - placed in the top-25 and advanced to Wednesday's match play portion of the tournament.
Recent freshman
Katie Chipman tied for third place overall among the 83 competitors, as she followed an opening round score of even par 71 with a 75 (+4) during round two. Chipman, who led the field after Monday's round, finished with a 146 (+4), tying with Aya Johnson. The duo was three strokes back of champion Kerrigan Parks (143, +1).
Incoming Laker Olivia Reed placed in a three-way tie for 11th place, as she tied Heather Fortushniak and Veronica Haque with a 154 (+12) in the 36-hole competition. Reed shot a 76 (+5) on Monday and followed up with a 78 (+7) in Tuesday's round.
Sophomore
Mackenzie Blomberg tied with two other individuals for 19th place, as she notched a 79 (+8) on Monday and a 77 (+6) on Tuesday. At 156 (+14) overall, Blomberg tied with Kristen Wolfe and Kelsey McDougall inside the top-20.
Junior
Samantha Moss notched consecutive rounds of 79 (+8) to place 23rd in the field with a two-day total of 158 (+16).
The tournament continues with match play beginning on Wednesday morning (July 12). By virtue of her third place tie, Chipman was seeded fourth in the 32-player field. She defeated 29-seed Jami Laude by a result of 3 & 2 to advance in match play. Her competitor in the round of 16 happens to be Reed, who was the 13th seed and defeated 20-seed Kelsey McDougall 2 & 1. Chipman and Reed are scheduled to face off later on Wednesday.
As the 21st seed, Blomberg technically pulled off the upset by defeating 12-seed Heather Fortushniak with a result of 4 & 3. She will face 5th seed Nichole Cox in the round of 16.
Moss, the 23rd seed, was matched up with 10-seed Natalie Johnson in the round of 32, but those final results were not yet available.
