Lenza Receives D2CCA First Team All-America Honors

Senior second baseman is just third Laker to be named D2CCA First Team All-American

2017 D2CCA All-America Teams

Following an outstanding season to cap off a stellar four-year career, GVSU senior second baseman Jenna Lenza was named to the Division II Conference Commissioner's Association All-America First Team on Wednesday (May 24), in a release from the national coordinator. Lenza is just the third player in GVSU history to earn D2CCA All-America First Team honors since the organization began handing out awards in 2007.

The D2CCA All-America Teams are voted on by Division II sports information directors from across the country. This is the second year in which the award was sponsored solely by the Division II Conference Commissioner's Association; for the first nine years of the program, Daktronics Inc. was the sponsor of the All-America awards.

Lenza is the first Laker to receive D2CCA All-America honors of any level since 2014. She joins Miranda Cleary (2014) and Katie Martin (2011, 2013) as the lone GVSU players to reach First Team All-America status from the D2CCA. Martin was the Daktronics National Player of the Year in both 2011 and 2013. Six other Lakers in program history have earned some sort of D2CCA or Daktronics All-America honors since 2007, whether it be Second Team, Third Team, or Honorable Mention plaudits.

Wednesday's award is a fitting honor for Lenza, who has been voted to the All-Midwest Region Teams three times in her career by either D2CCA or Daktronics. In 2014 and 2016, she was a Second Team All-Region selection before garnering First Team All-Region honors this season. Lenza doubled up with a First Team All-Region selection from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association in recent weeks, as well.

The three-time All-GLIAC First Team honoree, Lenza hit .456 with 73 hits, 45 runs, five home runs, and 31 RBI, helping GVSU reach the NCAA Tournament for the fourth consecutive season and finish the year with a 33-18 overall record. Lenza's 23 doubles are a new school record, as well as an all-time single-season GLIAC record. Her batting average and .529 on-base percentage are both the third-highest single-season totals in Laker history, while she is also ranked ninth in slugging percentage (.694) and tied for 10th in total bases (111).

Lenza put together one of the finest careers in recent Laker memory, as she ranks in the top-10 of nine offensive categories at Grand Valley State. Her 58 doubles are second-most all-time, while her 88 walks are third-best in program history. She is also fifth in on-base percentage (.454), total bases (364), and tied for fifth in runs (158). A starter in 198 of 199 career games, Lenza ranks sixth in both career hits (244) and slugging percentage (.570), seventh in batting average (.382), and ninth in home runs (18).

Joining Lenza on the All-America First Team was Wayne State's Lyndsay Butler (as a utility-pitcher). Lenza and Butler were the only GLIAC players to be named to any of the three All-America Teams.

Augustana senior shortstop Sarah Kennedy was the D2CCA National Player of the Year, while Minnesota State senior Coley Ries earned the National Pitcher of the Year award.
