Lenza, Lipovsky Named GLIAC Player, Pitcher of the Week

Lakers went 4-2 against Lewis, Hillsdale, and #18 Wayne State last week

Senior Jenna Lenza and sophomore Allison Lipovsky received both of the GLIAC's weekly honors on Monday morning (Apr. 3), as the pair helped the Lakers to a 4-2 record last week against Lewis, Hillsdale, and #18 Wayne State. Lenza was named the GLIAC Player of the Week, while Lipovsky earned GLIAC Pitcher of the Week honors.

GVSU notched a home sweep of non-conference opponent Lewis on Tuesday (Mar. 28), defeating the Flyers 1-0 and 8-0; it was the Lakers' 2017 home opener. On Saturday (Apr. 1), Grand Valley State split a doubleheader at Hillsdale, winning the opener 8-2 before falling in the nightcap 5-4. The Lakers also split against #18 Wayne State in Detroit on Sunday (Apr. 2), dropping game one by a 1-0 final, but bouncing back to take game two, 4-0.

Lenza put together a terrific week at the plate, batting .579 (11-for-19) and collecting a hit in five of the team's six contests. The second basemen was 3-for-5 with four RBI in the doubleheader sweep of Lewis on Tuesday, including a big three-run double in the 8-0 victory. Against Hillsdale on Saturday, she was nearly perfect, going 7-for-8 at the plate and scoring three times. Lenza was 4-for-4 with a pair of runs in the opener, while tallying a double, a run, and an RBI in game two. She was 1-for-3 and scored a run in the 4-0 game two win over #18 Wayne State on Sunday.

The GLIAC leader in doubles (13), Lenza is second in the league in on-base percentage (.538), third in batting average (.478), and fifth in slugging percentage (.685). She also ranks sixth in the conference in hits (44), RBI (22) and total bases (63), while scoring the ninth-most runs (21) of any player.

Lenza is now third in GVSU history with 48 career doubles and her 134 runs scored are ninth-most in program history. She needs one hit, two home runs, five total bases, and 10 RBI to reach the top-10 of those respective categories. With 75 career walks, Lenza is also fifth in Laker history in free passes.

Lipovsky threw 20.0 innings on the week and allowed only three runs (two earned) on 12 hits. The reigning GLIAC Freshman of the Year totaled just five walks and 20 strikeouts in her three outings, finishing the week with a 2-1 record and a 0.70 earned run average. She tossed a 101-pitch, complete-game shutout in a 1-0 victory over Lewis, tallying four hits and four strikeouts. Lipovsky also defeated Hillsdale with a complete-game victory, tossing 124 pitches and striking out six in an 8-2 win. She was the tough-luck loser in the 1-0 loss to #18 Wayne State, giving up one run on three hits in six innings; Lipovsky walked none and struck out 10.

At 5-3 overall, Lipovsky is second in the league with three shutouts, 7.58 strikeouts per game, and a .169 opponents batting average. Her 78 strikeouts and 1.75 earned run average are both fourth-best in the GLIAC and she has thrown eight complete games in her 72.0 innings of work, which is the fifth-highest total in the conference.

The Lakers are scheduled for a non-conference doubleheader at Saint Joseph's on Wednesday (Apr. 5), followed by a pair of home twinbills versus Findlay and Tiffin this weekend (Apr. 8-9).
