Box Score ALLENDALE, Mich. -- The Grand Valley State (6-8, 5-1 GLIAC) women's lacrosse team turned a slow start into a rout of the Walsh Cavaliers (7-8, 0-6 GLIAC) on Thursday with a 20-4 win over their GLIAC foe. The Lakers scored 10 goals in each half while all four Walsh goals were scored in the first half of the game.
Scoring was kicked off in the game by the Cavaliers, as they scored just under five minutes into the contest to take an early lead. GVSU would answer back with a goal from
Ashley Bailey just under two minutes later. Walsh would take the lead back at 22:03, but the lead would be their final one of the game and rather short-lived as
Meghan Datema scored a goal for the Lakers just a minute and a half later to tie the game up at 2-2. The goal would start an 8-0 run for the Lakers that included three goals from Datema, two goals from
Abbi O'Neal, and a goal apiece from
Ryan Skomial,
Sarah Stagaard, and
Carly Shisler to take a 9-2 lead.
Walsh would close the gap to 9-4 with a pair of goals at 11:33 and 1:34 that would prove to be the final Cavalier goals of the game. O'Neal would stretch the Laker lead to 10-4 with less than a minute remaining in the half. After halftime, GVSU would score 10 more goals, with Datema adding two more goals to give her five on the game.
Ashley Albright was also able to score her first career goal for GVSU in the second half. The Lakers would out-shoot the Cavaliers 47 to 14 on the game and 23 to 2 in the second half. Grand Valley was able to contain Walsh to their half of the field for much of the second half, allowing just 50% of Walsh's clears to be successful.
GVSU was led on the day in assists by Skomial, as the all-time points leader for GVSU provided six assists to Laker goal-scorers. Skomial would also lead the way in ground ball recoveries on the day with six, but
Kira Dosenberry was able to move into first all-time in the category as the senior hauled in three ground balls.
Meggan Loyd caused six turnovers on the day, while
Ashley Bailey provided three draw controls to lead in the category.
Sarah Zwilsky was awarded the win for the Lakers as the net-minder.
GVSU is back in action tomorrow as they host their final regular season contest against the Lake Erie Storm. The game represents senior day and will be the final home regular season game for six Laker seniors. Tomorrow's action begins at 7:00 PM at the GVSU Lacrosse Stadium.
