Lipovsky Earns Fourth Straight Honor, Lenza Named Player of the Week

The duo also won the GLIAC weekly awards on April 3rd

The Laker duo of senior Jenna Lenza and sophomore Allison Lipovsky was named the GLIAC Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, announced on Monday (Apr. 24) by the league offices. It is the fourth consecutive week that Lipovsky has been tabbed the GLIAC Pitcher of the Week and it was Lenza's second Player of the Week honor this season.

Lipovsky has now been the GLIAC Pitcher of the Week on Apr. 3, 10, 17, and 24. Lenza also won the Player of the Week award on Apr. 3, marking the second time this season that the pair have swept the conference's weekly honors.

Both players had standout performances during the Lakers' 6-0 homestand last week. GVSU is now 27-15 on the season and in first place in the GLIAC with a 13-5 conference tally. The Lakers have won seven straight doubleheaders and 15 consecutive games overall, including a perfect 12-0 tally at home.

Lipovsky went 3-0 in her three appearances, with a 0.64 ERA in 22.0 innings of victories over Aquinas, Lake Erie, and Walsh. For the week, the righty allowed just two runs on eight hits in three complete game wins. Overall, she totaled 34 strikeouts against just two walks and opponents hit just .108 against the reigning GLIAC Freshman of the Year.

In a 2-0 win over Aquinas last Tuesday (Apr. 18), Lipovsky tossed a two-hit shutout with 10 strikeouts. She did not walk a batter in her 93-pitch effort. The only two runs she allowed all week came in a 5-2 win over Lake Erie on Saturday (Apr. 22), as she gave up two runs on four hits. Lipovsky walked one batter and struck out 11 in 118 pitches. She finished off the weekend with a second complete-game shutout, this one of the eight-inning variety. The fireballer allowed just two hits, one walk, and struck out 13 Cavaliers in the 2-0 win over Walsh on Sunday (Apr. 23).

She has struck out 10 or more batters nine times this year, including each of her last six outings. Lipovsky has recorded 11, 13, 15, 10, 11, and 13 strikeouts in her last six appearances in the circle. The GLIAC leader in strikeouts per game (8.99), she is also second in total strikeouts (158), shutouts (eight), earned run average (1.20), and opponents batting average (.151), while ranking fifth in complete games (15) and sixth in wins (12).

During the Lakers' 15-game winning streak, Lipovsky is 7-0 with a 0.41 ERA, having tossed seven complete games and five total shutouts. In 51.0 innings in the circle, she has given up just 21 hits and three runs, while totaling nine walks and 80 strikeouts.

Lenza collected a base hit in all six victories, extending her hitting streak to 12 games in a row. She was 9-of-17 in the three doubleheaders and scored more runs (eight) than GVSU's opponents combined (seven). Against Aquinas on Tuesday, she combined to go 2-for-4 with a double, a walk, and two runs.

In the sweep of Lake Erie, Lenza went 3-for-4 in game one and scored a run. She was 1-for-3 in the nightcap with a double, two walks, and three runs scored. In Sunday's opening game against Walsh, she broke a 0-0 tie in the eighth inning with a two-run, two-out, walkoff homer down the left field line to give the Lakers a 2-0 victory. It was her third walkoff home run this season, having also done so on Mar. 10 against Lewis and on Apr. 9 against Tiffin.

Lenza followed that up with a 2-for-2 effort in game two's 3-0 win, adding two walks, a run, and a double. The two-bagger was her 22nd of the year and ties her with former Laker Katie Martin for the most doubles in a single season in GLIAC history.

Lenza leads the GLIAC in batting average, on-base percentage, and slugging percentage - not only in overall statistics, but in conference games as well. In league play, she is batting .518 with a .614 on-base percentage, and an .804 slugging percentage. Overall, Lenza is hitting .481 with a .555 on-base percentage, and a .737 slugging percentage. Those figures all lead the conference, as do her 22 doubles. She is also third in the league in walks (20) and total bases (98), fourth in runs (39), and hits (64).

Over the last 15 games, Lenza is hitting .477 with nine doubles and has single-handedly outscored the Laker opponents, 19-17. She also has a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage in 48 chances during that stretch.

The Lakers close the regular season this weekend. GVSU is at home against Ferris State at 3:30 p.m. on Friday (Apr. 28) before traveling to Saginaw Valley State on Sunday (Apr. 30) for a noon start.
