Grand Valley State has announced the addition of Hunter Hale to the Laker men's basketball program, as the 6'2" guard will transfer from Central Michigan and join the GVSU program next season. Hale played one season at CMU and redshirted this season; he will immediately be eligible to compete for the Lakers and will have three seasons of eligibility remaining in a GVSU uniform.
Hale appeared in 11 games for Central Michigan in 2015-16 as a true freshman for the Chippewas, totaling eight points and four rebounds in his lone year of competition. He redshirted during the 2016-17 season and will be a sophomore athletically during the 2017-18 campaign for Grand Valley State.
"Hunter is a great addition to our team," commented head coach
Ric Wesley, who will be in his 14th season at the helm of the Laker program next year. "He is an older guy who knows what it takes to be successful at the college level. We lost a great deal of offensive production this year and his ability to score should really help our team over the next few seasons."
Prepping at Kalamazoo Central and helping the Giants to back-to-back regular season and tournament championships in the Southwestern Michigan Athletic Conference (SMAC), Hale averaged 18 points, six assists, and four rebounds per game as a senior in 2014-15. He helped Kalamazoo Central to a 23-2 record and a second consecutive appearance in the Class A regional finals, while being named to the MLive Kalamazoo Gazette Dream Team Second Team.
Hale posted averages of 15 points, five assists, and three rebounds a game as a junior, leading the Giants to a 21-3 record as a junior in the 2013-14 season. He shot 48 percent from the field and 88 percent at the line that year, while increasing his percentages to 50 percent from the floor and 92 percent at the charity stripe during his senior campaign.
A team captain during his final two seasons, Hale earned All-SMAC First Team honors both years. He was a 2015 McDonald's All-American nominee and received BCAM All-Academic plaudits during his high school career.
