Day Two Tee Times
Grand Valley State had a pair of golfers tie for 11th place after day one of the opening round at the NCAA Division II Women's Golf Championships in Aurora, Colo. on Wednesday (May 18), as the Lakers finished the opening day with an eighth place team score. The four-day, 72-hole competition at CommonGround Golf Course just outside of Denver began on Wednesday, with senior
Gabrielle Shipley and freshman
Alex Amos each shooting a 1-over 73 to start the tournament.
GVSU's team score of 302 ( 14) after day one is eighth-best overall and just three strokes out of the top-five schools. Nova Southeastern and Rollins lead the field after the opening day, as each Florida school fired a 290 ( 2) to sit three strokes ahead of Dallas Baptist (293, 5). Augustana (297, 9) and Findlay (299, 11) round out the top five schools after the first 18 holes.
Shipley and Amos each recorded four birdies and five bogeys on the 6,468 yard, par-72 course on Wednesday. Shipley birdied the third and eighth holes en route to an even 36 on the front nine, followed by birdies on holes 11 and 15 on the back nine. She closed her opening day of play with three consecutive pars for a 73. Shipley and Hally Leadbetter from Rollins had the best par-5 scoring of the day, as each golfer shot 3-under on the par-5's.
Playing in her first national tournament competition, Amos answered a first-hole bogey with a birdie on the par-three second hole. She finished 2-over on the front nine, but finished the afternoon with a flurry. Amos birdied holes 15, 17, and 18 (including her second 'two' of the day on the 17th hole) to go 1-under on the back nine and match Shipley's 73.
The four birdies by both Shipley and Amos were tied for fourth-most at the competition. The Laker duo is tied with three other golfers with their 1-over 73.
Junior
Julie Guckian is tied for 38th place with a 5-over 77. She birdied the opening hole of the tournament and recorded eight pars on the back nine - including seven straight pars - for a strong 1-over on the back to close her first round.
Sophomore
Samantha Moss and junior
Alex Taylor are tied for 56th place with a 7-over 79. Moss converted 11 pars (tied with Guckian for the most by a Laker) and birdied the par-5 15th hole to finish the back nine with a 38 ( 2). Taylor collected birdies on the third and fourth holes and posted 10 pars during her round to tie with Moss.
The Lakers tied for the fifth-most birdies (12) in the 12-team competition.
Five golfers shot under par on Wednesday, led by Mailen Domecq Chantry from Nova Southeastern, who paced the field with an opening day 69 (-3).
Taylor will be the first player off the tee in Thursday's second round, as the junior will tee off at 8:00 a.m. MDT (10:00 a.m. ET). The rest of the Lakers will begin play between 8:00 a.m. and 8:40 a.m. MDT (10:00 a.m. to 10:40 a.m. ET).
