After sweeping Saginaw Valley State and Wayne State at home last weekend, as well as capturing a share of the GLIAC regular season championship, the Lakers were rewarded on Monday afternoon, more specifically senior
Kaitlyn Wolters. The team's setter was named the GLIAC North Division Player of the Week after a pair of strong outings that resulted in GVSU sweeps.
Over the weekend, Wolters totaled 60 assists, 21 digs, 12 kills, five blocks, and a pair of aces. Each set, she averaged 10.00 assists, 3.50 digs, 2.75 points, 2.00 kills, and 0.83 blocks. Arguably the top attacking setter in the league, Wolters picked up 12 kills in 19 attacks (without committing an error) and hit .632 in the two victories.
In Friday night's tight win over SVSU - sets one and two were decided by the minimum two points - Wolters neared a triple-double. She collected 32 assists, 16 digs, and attacked 12 times, securing eight kills and not committing an error for a .667 hitting percentage.Â
During Saturday's Senior Day victory over Wayne State, Wolters handed out 28 assists and added five digs, four block assists, and four kills for a .571 attack mark.
Wolters' 9.51 assists per set is fifth-best in the league, while her 808 total assists is sixth-most, despite 17 of GVSU's 25 matches being played in just three sets. She also has served up 33 aces, the seventh-best tally in the GLIAC. With just four more attacks to qualify for the league minimum, Wolters' hitting percentage of .410 would far and away by the top mark in the conference, as the best percentage currently is a .337 clip.
On Friday night, Wolters picked up her 2,000th career assist and now has 2,059 helpers in her two seasons in Allendale, putting her in eighth place in Laker career history. As the team's starting setter, Wolters and GVSU are 50-7 over the past two years.
The Lakers, who with a share of the conference championship are back-to-back GLIAC champions, are the #1 seed in this week's conference tournament. GVSU hosts Ohio Dominican in a league quarterfinal match on Wednesday night (Nov. 12) inside the Fieldhouse Arena at 7:00 p.m. With a victory, Grand Valley State will host the semifinals and finals of the GLIAC Tournament this Saturday and Sunday (Nov. 15-16) in Allendale.
