Grand Valley State will induct five former student-athletes into the Athletics Hall of Fame as the Class of 2005. New members will be: Kim Biskup (1997-2000), softball; Katie Flynn (1993-97), swimming; Jeff Fox (1995-98), football; Charlie Mandt (1989-92), men's basketball; Mary Randall (1997-2000), women's basketball.
The 2005 Hall of Fame class will be inducted at the Hall of Fame banquet on Friday, Oct. 28, at the Kirkhof Center and then honored during halftime of the Grand Valley State-Northern Michigan Homecoming game on Saturday, Oct. 29. This year's class will join the 76 members previously inducted into the Hall of Fame. The first GVSU Athletics Hall of Fame class was inducted in 1986. Plaques honoring all inductees are on display at the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena.
"We are inducting another outstanding class into our Hall of Fame," said GVSU athletics director Tim Selgo. "These five individuals were outstanding student-athletes and fine representatives of Grand Valley State."
Kim Biskup
Softball
Kim Biskup (Bay City, Mich./All Saints) concluded her career as the most prolific power hitter in Grand Valley State softball history. Biskup, a 2000 National Fastpitch Coaches Association First-Team All-American and the GLIAC Player of the Year, established single-season and career records in virtually every offensive category. Her final two collegiate campaigns are nearly unmatched in terms of offensive production. Kim led the nation in home runs as a junior (21) and senior (21), while also establishing an NCAA Division II record for home runs in consecutive seasons (42). As a junior, Biskup hit a team-best .442 with 80 hits, 21 home runs and 78 RBI's, while hitting .396 with 66 RBI's and 61 hits as a senior. Kim finished her career as the all-time Division II leader in walks (110), while ranking third in RBI's (238), fifth in home runs (46) and 16th in games played (238). During her career with the Lakers, Kim tallied 248 hits, scored 120 runs, drove in 238 runs, and drilled 46 home runs. Biskup, who was a two-time First-Team All-GLIAC honoree and earned second-team All-NFCA All-America plaudits as a junior, guided GVSU to a four-year record of 189-55-1 and three NCAA Great Lakes Regional appearances.
Katie Flynn Flannery
Swimming
Katie Flynn Flannery (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.) will go down as one of Grand Valley State University's finest student-athletes. Katie was a true student-athlete and garnered numerous honors in the pool and the classroom. In addition to earning 15 all-american awards, Katie was Grand Valley State's first-ever recipient of an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship Award. Flynn Flannery was also nominated as the 1997 NCAA Woman of the Year in Michigan. Katie was 61-12 in dual meet competition and set 28 individual records during her four-year career. In addition, she was a part of seven relay school records. She finished fifth in the 100 free at the 1996 and 1997 National Championships and sixth in the 50 free in 1997. Katie also anchored four relay teams that qualified for the National Championships in 1997. Flynn Flannery was a four-time recipient of College Swim Coaches Association Academic All America Award and was named to the GLIAC All-Academic Team four times. She was a second-team GTE/CoSIDA All-District honoree, was on the Deans List for six semesters, and earned the GVSU Academic Excellence Award eight times.
Jeff Fox
Football/Baseball
Jeff Fox (Holland, Mich.) was one of the most prolific offensive performers in Grand Valley State football history. Fox, who finished third in the balloting for the Harlon Hill Award as the best player in Division II in 1998, guided GVSU to two GLIAC titles and a berth in the 1998 NCAA DII playoffs. Fox completed 60.7 percent of his passes during his career for 8,197 yards and 63 touchdowns. The two-time First-Team All-GLIAC honoree still ranks second in single-season passing yards in GLIAC history with 2,933. Fox also holds the second (3,260), fifth (2,515) and sixth-best (2,422) single-season passing yardage totals in GVSU history and his 8,197 passing yards is second in school history. Fox's 30 touchdown passes in 1998 ranks as the third-best single-season total in Laker annals, and his 63 career TD passes also ranks third all-time. Jeff currently holds the GVSU single-game record for completions (30) and attempts (47). A two-time all-american on the gridiron, Fox also was a standout for the Lakers on the baseball diamond and ranks among the single-season and career leaders in 10 different categories.
Charlie Mandt
Men's Basketball
Charlie Mandt (Troy, Mich.) finished his career as one of the best all-around players in Grand Valley State men's basketball history. Mandt played in 117 games during his career, the second-highest total in Laker basketball annals. Charlie was a prolific scorer and shot blocker for the Lakers, ranking in top 10 of every single-season and career categories. Mandt ranks second all-time in blocked shots (163) and sixth all-time in points scored (1,448), and field goals made (604). Charlie holds three of the top six single-season totals for blocked shots. Mandt scored 406 points, pulled down 178 rebounds and blocked 45 shots as a junior, followed by a 539-point, 201-rebound and 53-block shot senior season. Charlie was named honorable mention all-american following his senior campaign and the 87 wins he was a part of during his career ranks as the top four-year career total in Laker history. Grand Valley State won one GLIAC regular season title, two GLIAC Tournament titles and qualified for the NCAA Division II National Tournament twice during his career.
Mary Randall
Women's Basketball
Mary Randall (Grand Ledge, Mich.) concluded her career as the most prolific scorer in Grand Valley State women's basketball history. Randall rewrote the single-season and career scoring records for GVSU. Mary holds the career records for points (2,156) and free throws made (555), while ranking second in made field goals (800). In addition, Randall is sixth in Laker annals in rebounding (817) and fifth in steals (205). Randall's 672 points as a sophomore ranks as the top single-season total, while her 584 points her junior year is the third-best total. Mary is the GLIAC single-season record holder for points (441), scoring average (24.5), field goals made (172) and free throws made (97). Randall tallied the second-best, single-game scoring mark with a 41-point outing vs. Wayland (Tex.) Baptist as a senior. During her career, Randall scored in double figures in 110-of-114 games played. Mary was a four-time All-GLIAC honoree and earned All-Great Lakes Region First-Team honors as a sophomore and junior. Randall earned WBCA/Kodak District 4 All-America honors and was twice named to the Daktronics All-American Team.
