The Grand Valley State athletic department hosted the second annual FanFest on Thursday night (Aug. 26), presented by 48 West Apartments. Over 3,000 fans, students, and community members packed the Laker Turf Building and were able to meet and greet with the 2010 GVSU football and volleyball teams.
FanFest created a unique environment where fans could interact with coaches and players on a one-on-one basis. Both the football and volleyball teams had their players run through drills, take pictures with fans, and sign autographs. Fans also had the opportunity to purchase tickets for athletic events and this was the first time that GVSU students could get their football tickets for the home opener on Sept. 2 against #11 West Texas A&M.
More than 1,500 Laker student tickets were picked up in the first 45 minutes of FanFest, up from the total of 1,200 tickets from last year's FanFest. Thursday night's activities continued building the excitement for the 2010 football season opener for #2 Grand Valley State, which will be an 8:00 p.m. start next Thursday (Sept. 2) at Lubbers Stadium. GVSU's 2009 home opener (a 38-7 victory over Saginaw Valley State) drew a student attendance record of 8,384, while also setting a school single-game and GLIAC single-game attendance record of 16,467.
The Laker volleyball team heads to Florida to open its season at the University of Tampa Tournament next weekend (Sept. 3-5). GVSU's home opener is on Sept. 11 with a 4:00 p.m. match against Michigan Tech in Fieldhouse Arena.
