GVSU Claims 2008-09 Learfield Sports Directors' Cup

Orlando, Fla. - For the sixth time in as many years, Grand Valley State has been named the winner of the Learfield Sports Director's Cup for NCAA Division II. The Learfield Sports Directors' Cup, which has been referred to as the NACDA Directors' Cup in the past, is a trophy presented to the top athletic department in the country. The scoring system is based on the national finishes of seven men's and seven women's sports.

"This is an accomplishment that really reflects on the quality student-athletes we have at Grand Valley," said athletic director, Tim Selgo. "I am extremely proud of our coaches and administration and thank the university for its wonderful support of our athletic program."

This year, GVSU finished with 1014.50 points and was able to tally points in the maximum of 14 sports (7 men's, 7 women's). The Lakers placed a total of 18 teams in postseason play in the 2008-09 academic year with eleven teams finishing in the top 10.

Grand Valley State finished second in women's cross country, women's indoor track and field, and women's golf, third in volleyball, fourth in women's outdoor track and field, fifth in men's cross country, and football, seventh in baseball, ninth in soccer, women's swimming and men's swimming, 12th in men's indoor track and field and men's outdoor track and field, 33rd in men's and women's basketball and tennis and 35th in men's golf.

Rounding out the top five were Minnesota State Mankato (800.25), Central Missouri (776.00), Abilene Christian (721.00), and Indianapolis (695.00). GLIAC schools were also well represented with four schools finishing in the top 20 of the standings. Ashland (613.75) finished sixth, Wayne State (499.00) placed 11th, and Findlay (447.50) secured 19th place.
