Andy Boyce enters his 18th year as head swimming and diving coach at Grand Valley State. Andy joined the staff as an assistant coach in August of 2004 and then became head coach in 2007 after the retirement of Dewey Newsome. Newsome is the only other head coach in the program's history.
Boyce has led the Lakers to new heights since taking over as head coach, evidenced by the breaking of every individual swimming record kept by the program. In addition, GVSU's top-10 performance lists are dominated by student-athletes under Boyce's tutelage and the Lakers have earned 712 All-America honors since the 2007 campaign.
While enjoying outstanding individual success, the Lakers have excelled as a team under Boyce with the Laker men having won 14 GLIAC titles (2005, 2008, 2010, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025) under Boyce and have never finished lower than second in the team standings. In addition, GVSU has 3 National Champions, 2 relays and 1 individual. On top of that, 22 NCAA top 10 finishes, including a program-best, fourth-place finish during the 202-2025 campaign, and five top five finishes. The Laker women have won seven GLIAC titles (2010, 2017, 2019, 2021, 2023, 2024, 2025) under Boyce, while finishing among the top two 11 times. The women also have seven top 10 finishes at the NCAA Championships.
Boyce has mentored seven individuals that have earned GLIAC Men's Swimmer of the Year and seven that have been named GLIAC Men's Freshman of the Year, while seven women have earned the GLIAC Women's Swimmer of the Year honor and five have been named the GLIAC Women's Freshman of the Year.
Grand Valley State has been dominant in dual meet action under Boyce. The men are 119-27 overall, while the women are 124-1-66 for a combined program mark of 243-1-66 (.782).
Boyce has been named the GLIAC Men's Coach of the Year 11 times and the Women's Coach of the Year six times. In addition, Andy has received the CSCAA Award of Excellence after each of his 17 years as head coach.
The Lakers have excelled academically as well, having earned Scholar All-America team plaudits for both the men and women by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America 17 times under his direction.
Prior to arriving at Grand Valley State Boyce served as a graduate assistant coach at Ball State University from August of 2002 through May of 2004. While at Ball State, Andy earned his Master's degree in Sports Management. He also coached high school and several club teams. He was a four-year letter winner for the Cardinals in the pool and a member of the 200 medley and 400 medley relays that established school records during his time in Muncie. Boyce was a two time, all-state selection at Grand Rapids Northview High School where he was named Most Valuable Swimmer three times. Andy was also a three-time all-area honoree.
