Pensacola, Fla. - The GVSU Men's and Women's Cross Country squads are ready to make a run at the Division II Cross Country National Championships on Saturday, Nov. 18 in Pensacola, Fla. The men's team will open the day at 9 am CT and will be followed by the women's team who races at 10:15 am CT. The men's team finished in fourth in the nation at the 2005 National Championships. The women's team finished in second place, just 15 points behind National Champion Adams State.

"The key on Saturday will be our ability to compete at a high level over the second half of the race," Head Coach Jerry Baltes said. "We know there are some great teams on both sides. We respect the competition but most importantly we need to take care of ourselves and simply focus on racing to our full potential"

For the men's cross country team it will be their fifth consecutive appearance in the championship. They will be led by junior Nate Peck who has won three consecutive Regional Championships. The Lakers had four runners in the top 11 at the Great Lakes Regional en route to securing their spot in the National Championship.

The women's cross country team looks for their first National Championship as well, after finishing 2005 in second place, just 15 points behind Adams State. GVSU captured its sixth consecutive Regional Championship to reach the National Championship. Laura Aderman and Stacey Kandas lead the Lakers as they finished first and third in the regional and look to repeat former Laker Mandi Zemba's Individual Title in 2005.

"We are excited for the opportunity to compete for a National Championship down here in Pensacola," Baltes added.
