Allendale, Mich. - Grand Valley State will attempt to defend its title at the 2002 Lakefront Invitational in Chicago, Ill. on Saturday (Oct. 5). Last year, the Lakers won the event with 79 points, 34 ahead of second place, with the next eight teams all being NCAA DI. Sophomore Natalie Ewing led the way for GVSU finishing in sixth place with a time of 18:07, her best time of the year. GVSU will face tough competition again with 52 schools from all different divisions competing for the title at one of the largest meets in the Midwest. Grand Valley enters the event #3 in in the latest Division II rankings.

Loyola, Missouri, Kent State and DePaul are the Division I schools who will challenge the Lakers for the top spot. Missouri enters the race as the 20th ranked team in the country and top team in the Midwest region among DI schools. Lewis University, Northern Kentucky, and SIU-Edwardsville are the top teams from Division II with Elmhurst College, ranked 24th, representing Division III.

The women are scheduled to start the 5K event at 11:15 am central time.
