Allendale, Mich. - #3 Grand Valley State had a dominant showing to win the 2002 Great Lakes Regional meet for the second straight year. The Lakers placed five individuals in the top 10 and finished with 33 points, 19 points ahead of Northern Michigan and 103 points in front of third place Wayne State. Mandi Long led GVSU as she finished third individually with a time of 22:10 in the 6K event. The Lakers also took spots six through nine, 12, and 21. The Lakers advance to the NCAA DII National Meet on Saturday, Nov. 23 in Ashland, Ohio. Grand Valley placed fifth in the nation a year ago and is ranked third in the country this season.
Long's time was the second best in Grand Valley's history and was even more special becuase she ran the whole race with one shoe! Mandi's shoe was accidently taken off by a fellow competitor when the large group started the race, and Long never stopped to put it back on.
Shannon Antvelink placed sixth in the meet with a time of 22:25, while freshman Kara Egan placed seventh in 22:30. Rebecca Winters and Natalie Ewing took the next two spots with times of 22:32 and 22:35, respectively. Jeannette Seckinger placed 12th in 22:42 while Krista O'Dell was 21st with a time of 23:01.
