Grand Valley State's men's and women's cross country teams dominated the Great Lakes Regional Championship, capturing both titles and advancing the NCAA National Championships. The men won their third straight title, while the women clinched their fourth consecutive title. Both teams will race at the 2004 Division II Cross Country National Championships in Evansville, Ind. on Nov. 20.
on the men's side, GVSU tallied 65 points, finishing ahead of second place Hillsdale by 21 points. Freshman Nate Peck captured the individual title with a winning time of 32:01.81, while senior Ryan Cole finished in second place with a time of 32:07.11. Sophomore Ryan Holm took 15th (32:54.61, while sophomore Chris Pabst ran a 32:57.32 for 17th place. Freshman Robbie Young took 30th (33:28.48), Grant Fall ran a 33:55.21 for 44th place, and junior Jason Prowant took 82nd with a 35:29.75.
The women tallied 31 points, 67 points ahead of second place Northern Michigan. Junior Mandy Long-Zemba finished first for the Lakers and second place overall with a time of 22:05.28. Senior Krista O'Dell took fifth place (22:32.84), Diana Martin-Painter ran a 22:36.52 for sixth place, while freshman Karlie Singleton took eighth with a time of 22:40.77. Junior Adrian Chouinard rounded out the top ten with a time of 22:43.83. Sophomore Sarah Jaquith finished in 16th place (23:00.78) and Bridgette Beeny took 27th with a time of 23:23.94.
