KENOSHA, Wis. - The third-ranked Grand Valley State women's cross country team continued its regional dominance on Saturday (Nov. 3), as Allyson Winchester (Wayland, Mich./Middleville) won by 14 seconds to help lead the Lakers to their 12th straight regional crown.
Winchester was the story of the race for the Lakers, as she dominated the field by 14 seconds to win the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional Championships with a time of 20:57 on the 6-kilometer course. After being named the GLIAC Women's Cross Country Athlete of the Year just a couple weeks ago, Winchester now adds the USTFCCCA Midwest Regional Athlete of the Year honor to her awards as well.
Winchester paced a group of six Lakers to finish inside the top 16, with the top five scored Lakers finishing within the top 13.
Sophomore Hannah Osborn (Fort Wayne, Ind./Concordia Lutheran) finished ninth with a time of 21:40, while junior Courtney Brewis (Dearborn, Mich./Divine Child) crossed the line in 10th at the same time.
Finishing outside the top five Lakers who were scored but still with a strong performance was sophomore Brianna Hewett (Palatine, Ill./Fremd) who finished 16th with a time of 21:56. The final Laker to cross the line was junior Kelcie Severson (Rockford, Mich.) in 36th with a time of 22:29.
The top six Lakers will all earn USTFCCCA Midwest All-Region honors for finishing inside the top 25.
The Lakers easily won the team race with 45 points, outdistancing Saginaw Valley State (110), Ferris State (134), Southern Indiana (147) and Bellarmine (154), who rounded out the top five.
GVSU now advances to the NCAA Division II National Championships in two weeks on Saturday, November 17th in Joplin, Mo.
