Lakers Win GLIAC Championship For Second Straight Year

Allendale, Mich. - Grand Valley State won its second straight women's GLIAC Cross Country Championship on Saturday at Kensington Park. The Lakers finished with 29 points to earn the win over Northern Michigan (55) and Wayne State (75), who ended up in second and third respectively. Shannon Antvelink won the individual championship with a time of 21:59 in the 6K race. The Lakers had six athletets garner GLIAC honors, with three finishing on the First Team and three on Second Team.

Antvelink earned her third individual win of the year as she also won the NCAA Pre-Regional and the Michigan Intercollegiate. Antvelink is the second Laker in school history to break the 22 minute mark in the 6K race. Natalie Ewing and Rebecca Winters also earned First Team honors for the women with Ewing placing third and Winters sixth. Kara Egan and Krista O'Dell also finished out the last two spots in the top 10 and Jeannette Seckinger was the last All-GLIAC honoree as she placed 13th.

The women entered the weekend ranked number three in the country and number one in the Great Lakes regional rankings. GVSU has won three out of the last four GLIAC titles.

The Lakers will host the Great Lakes Regional competition on November 9 at Rolling Hills Golf Course in Hudsonville, Mich. The women will try to defend their title as they won 2001 NCAA Regional at Wisconsin Parkside. The women's race will start the day at 11:00 am with the men following.
