GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The third-ranked Grand Valley State women's cross country team dominated the field on Friday (Oct. 5) afternoon at the Michigan Intercollegiate Championship, sweeping the top three spots and placing 10 runners in the top 19 to win the event hosted by Calvin.
Redshirt freshman Jessica Janecke (Scales Mound, Ill./Wahlert Catholic), the reigning GLIAC Cross Country Runner of the Week, again put up an incredible performance, traversing the just-under 5k course in a time of 17:16.4 to win the event.
Sophomore Allyson Winchester (Wayland, Mich./Middleville) wasn't far behind, placing second with a time of 17:19.3 as the Laker duo crushed the rest of the field.
Junior Courtney Brewis (Dearborn, Mich./Divine Child) completed the GVSU trifecta at the top of the standings, crossing the line third in a time of 17:34.9.
Also finishing in the top five was junior Kelcie Severson (Rockford, Mich.) with a time of 17:46.8.
Another six Laker student-athletes found their way across the line within the top 20, including sophomore Madie Rodts (Niles, Mich.) and junior Molly Slavens (Canton, Mich./Plymouth) finishing in the top 10 in eighth (18:00.5) and ninth (18:00.8), respectively.
Sophomore Hannah Osborn (Fort Wayne, Ind./Concordia Lutheran) came across 12th with a time of 18:05.9, while junior Kelsey Young (Wixom, Mich./Walled Lake Western) and sophomore Brianna Hewett (Palatine, Ill./Fremd) finished 14th (18:07.2) and 16th (18:08.5). Redshirt freshman Mary Boyd (Sturgis, Mich.) was the final Laker in the top 20, crossing the line in 19th with a time of 18:10.0.
GVSU easily won the team title with 19 total points, outdistancing second-place Calvin (74) and third-place Saginaw Valley State (85).
The Lakers also had multiple athletes competing in the "open" division, mostly as unattached runners.
The team will take next weekend off in preparation for the biggest meets of the year. The next event for GVSU will be the GLIAC Cross Country Championships, taking place on Saturday, October 20th in Midland, Mich.
