South Bend, Ind. - The Grand Valley State men's and women's cross country teams put together a terrific day of running in South Bend, Ind. on Friday afternoon (Oct. 2) at the 54th running of the Notre Dame Invitational. The women's team placed first while the men's team placed second in the Gold Division, as Grand Valley State competed against 21 other teams from Divisions I, II, III, and NAIA schools.
GVSU men's team recorded a score of 52 points, finishing second behind North Central College, which totaled 46 points. The Lakers finished well ahead of Eastern Michigan (93), UW-Stevens Point (106), and Notre Dame (217), which rounded out the top five.
The women's team dominated their opponents by taking the top spot, scoring 48 points. Dayton was the closest team placing second with 104 points, followed by Calvin College (119), Eastern Michigan (160), and Southern Illinois (164), which rounded out the top five.
For the men, Grand Valley State placed seven runners in the top-20, led by sophomore Tyler Emmorey. Emmorey came in third place with a time of 24:44, while sophomore Anthony Witt finished in ninth (25:11). Sophomore Paul Zielinski was not far behind finishing 11th with a time of 25:15, while fellow sophomore Jeff Nordquist finished 14th (25:19). Junior Simon Nyang came in 15th at 25:23, while senior Ross Faasse crossed the finished line 17th at 25:25 and sophomore Ryan Toth placed 20th at 25:30.
On the women's side, Grand Valley State placed seven runners in the top-50, led by junior Megan Macerantini, who finished second with a time of 17:40. Juniors Amy Kolin was ninth at 18:02 and Katherine McCarthy rounded out the top-10 with a time of 18:05. Sophomore Julia Nowak and senior Lynsey Ardingo tied for 15th with a time of 18:19. Sophomore Jessie Vickers was 22nd at 18:28 and senior Leah Borns crossed the finished line at 18:41, tying for 31st.
