Chicago, Ill. - Powered by a second place finish by senior Mandi Zemba (17:16), Grand Valley State place five runners among the top 27 to record a second place team score of 73 points at the Loyola Lakefront Invitational Saturday. Marquette (DI) placed first with a team score of 54.
Karlie Singleton placed seventh (17:51), followed by Laura Aderman (16th/18:12) Adrian Chounarid (21st/18:18) and Stacey Kanda (27th/18:28). In addition, Laura Bader crossed in 50th and Kelly Gibbons in 54th.
"We ran really well against some outstanding competition," said head coach Jerry Baltes.
"This was a great team effort for our ladies. It was the fastest top five total team time we have ever raced in the last six years," said Baltes. "To have two ladies run faster than the school record was outstanding. Zemba was tough the entire race in crushing her school record by almost 40 seconds."
"We were excited to be second overall and right on the heals of 22nd ranked Division I team Marquette. We did a real nice job over the entire race of competing against tough field," added Baltes.
GVSU beat the likes Ball State, Loyola (Chicago), Western Michigan, Northwestern and Xavier.
