East Lansing, Mich. - While the Grand Valley State women's cross country team only had one runner in the top ten at the Spartan Invite, a great team time and pack run helped the Lakers to a second-place finish in unofficial scoring. Rebecca Winchester led the pack, finishing 10th with a time of 22:21. GVSU's score of 64 was behind Michigan State, but ahead of Central Michigan's 84.
"We're very pleased with our effort," said GVSU head coach Jerry Baltes. "We had a great race from first to seventh, and that gave us a low split time. They ran together in a pack and finished well."
With all five of GVSU's scorers coming in between 10th and 15th place, Winchester's time of 22:21 was just ahead of the five-person split time of 22:29. Kelly Gibbons finished 12th, just behind Winchester, with a final time of 22:25. Rounding out the scorers for the Lakers were Lori Burgess (13th, 22:31), Susie Rivard (14th, 22:33) and Leah Borns (15th, 22:34). Megan Maceratini and Amy Kolin were right in the mix, as well, finishing 16th and 17th with times of 22:37 and 22:52.
