Grand Valley State dominated the Aquinas Open Friday, finishing in the top five spots to recorded the minimum of 15 points. Host school Aquinas finished in second place with 66 points. GVSU will run at the Ferris State Open on Friday, Sept. 22 at 4:00 p.m.
Junior Susie Rivard won her first collegiate race of her career as she ran an impressive last mile of the 5K to post a winning of of 18:25.00. Sophomore Laura Aderman took second in a time of 18:28.00, while graduate student Stacey Kandas placed third, running a time of 18:32.00. Junior Karlie Singleton finished in fourth place (18:41.00).
Freshmen Lori Burgess (18:49.00) and Leah Borns (18:50.00) got off to a great start in their first meet as Lakers, finishing in fifth and sixth place, respectively.
Junior Ashley Wharton ran a time of 19:08.00 to take eighth place and freshman Jessica Koster ran a 19:10.00 to round out the top ten.
"This was a very solid opener for our ladies. It was good to see where we are at fitness wise," said head coach Jerry Baltes. "We had a great pack early on as we stayed threshold through the first half of the race."
"Our two freshmen, Burgess and Borns both ran a very nice first collegiate race," added Baltes. "The 25 second 1-6 gap we had is very impressive at this point of the season."
"We will need to move the pack up as a whole and bring our fifth runner a bit closer to our number our runner in order to do the things we want to later in November," said Baltes.
