Allendale, Mich. - Grand Valley State junior Nicole Bayle and senior Carly Miller were named to the 2002 AVCA All-American First Team after leading the Lakers to a 31-2 record and their third straight appearance in the Elite Eight. Miller became the first Laker to earn First Team plaudits two times as she also received the award last year, while Bayle becomes just the third player in GVSU history to earn the honor. Senior Chara Fehsenfeld was named AVCA All-Great Lakes Region First Team for the second straight season and Head Coach Deanne Scanlon earned Great Lakes Region Coach of the year for the third year in a row. Junior Sabrina Bird was also named All-Region Honorable Mention.
Bayle earned All-American plaudits after leading GVSU to a .302 team attack percentage with 11.87 assists per game. Nicole also leads the GLIAC with 79 service aces and is third on the Lakers with 87 total blocks. Bayle has also earned All-GLIAC First Team and GLIAC Tournament MVP honors this season.
Miller sits in first place on the GVSU career kills list with 2,123 in her four year career and also ranks 11th on the NCAA DII list. Carly led the GLIAC in 2002 with 4.40 kills per game and was fourth in the league with a .332 attack percentage. Miller was named to the All-GLIAC First Team for the third straight season and also earned All-GLIAC Tournament and All-Great Lakes Region Tournament honors.
The Lakers will play in the NCAA DII Quarterfinals on Thursday at 6:00 pm Eastern time against Edinboro in Canyon, Texas.
