Nov. 17, 2013
Allendale, Mich. - After closing out a tremendous regular season on Saturday (Nov. 16) with a 3-1 win at Hillsdale, the #15 Grand Valley State volleyball team learned its first postseason opponent. The Lakers will host Saginaw Valley State on Wednesday night (Nov. 20) at 7:00 p.m. in the opening round of the GLIAC Tournament. It is one of four quarterfinal matches to be played that night.
GVSU will enter 2013 postseason play on a 16-match winning streak, tied for the seventh-longest in program history. It is also the longest win streak Grand Valley State has ever put together heading into the postseason, barely topping 2010's 15-match win streak entering that season's GLIAC Tournament. The 2010 team advanced to the GLIAC championship match before winning the Midwest Regional Tournament and earning an NCAA Elite Eight berth.
Overall, the Lakers are 26-3 on the season and 17-1 in GLIAC play. Grand Valley State is the top seed in the conference and also in the latest Midwest Region rankings. In addition to the 16-match win streak, GVSU has won 24 of its last 25 matches. The Lakers are 11-2 in Fieldhouse Arena, winning nine straight contests and having not lost at home since Sept. 7.
Wednesday's match will be a rematch from two weeks ago, when Grand Valley State swept Saginaw Valley State by a 3-0 score on Nov. 8 in Fieldhouse Arena. The Lakers had little problem, winning by scores of 25-12, 25-13, and 25-20.
Here are the GLIAC Quarterfinal matches to be played on Wednesday night (Nov. 20). All matches are set for 7:00 p.m.:
#8 Saginaw Valley State at #1 Grand Valley State
#7 Hillsdale at #2 Ashland
#6 Findlay at #3 Northern Michigan
#5 Northwood at #4 Ferris State
If GVSU defeats the Cardinals on Wednesday night, the Lakers would host the GLIAC Semifinals (Saturday, Nov. 23) and the GLIAC championship match (Sunday, Nov. 24) at times to be determined.
