Lakers to Host Ferris State in GLIAC Quarterfinal Match

Nov. 10, 2008

Allendale, Mich. - After a 15-1 record in regular season conference play, Grand Valley State will host a first round GLIAC Quarterfinal match on Wednesday night (Nov. 12). The Lakers will battle West Michigan rival Ferris State at 7:00 p.m., as the two teams meet for the third time this season. With a victory, GVSU will earn the right to host the GLIAC Final Four, which will be at Fieldhouse Arena this weekend (Nov. 15-16).

The Lakers (26-3, 15-1) enter the tournament as the #1 seed from the North Division, while Ferris State (16-12, 8-8) earned the second wild-card berth. Earlier this season, GVSU swept the Bulldogs, 3-0, on Sept. 16 in front of the Laker faithful. Over a month later on Oct. 24, FSU took Grand Valley State to five sets, with the Lakers coming from behind to win the final two sets for the road victory.

If GVSU knocks off the Bulldogs, the Lakers would host the GLIAC Semifinals and Finals on Saturday and Sunday (Nov. 15-16). The two semifinal matches will be played at 5:00 and 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, with Grand Valley State playing the earlier match.

After the completion of the four quarterfinal matches (played at the schools with the highest seed), the four remaining teams will be re-seeded from one through four to determine the semifinal contests. The GLIAC Championship match will be played on Sunday at 4:00 p.m.

Here are the GLIAC Tournament Quarterfinal match-ups (all games begin at 7:00 p.m.):

(WC2) Ferris State at (1N) Grand Valley State

(3N) Saginaw Valley State at (2N) Michigan Tech

(WC1) Northern Michigan at (1S) Northwood

(3S) Hillsdale at (2S) Wayne State

Cost for admission is $5 for adults, while students, senior citizens, and children are $3 apiece. The first 100 GVSU students to Wednesday's match will be admitted free. If the Lakers advance to Saturday and Sunday's matches, the first 100 Grand Valley State students will also be admitted free to those contests.
