Allendale, Mich. - The Grand Valley State volleyball team has its biggest weekend of the season, as the Lakers host Northern Michigan and Michigan Tech over the next two days, with conference championship and playoff implications being decided in the next 48 hours. GVSU hosts the Wildcats on Friday (Nov. 6) at 7:00 p.m. and takes on the Huskies on Saturday (Nov. 7) at 4:00 p.m., which is also Senior Day.
GVSU is 15-10 overall and owns a 10-4 conference mark. The Lakers are tied for second place in the GLIAC North Division, along with Northern Michigan, which is 10-4. Both teams are chasing Saginaw Valley State, which has a one-match lead in the win column, as the Cardinals are 11-4. Michigan Tech sits behind GVSU and Northern Michigan with a 10-5 record in the GLIAC. Hillsdale has already claimed the South Division championship with a 10-4 conference tally.
This weekend is big in terms of seeding for the conference tournament and where that tournament will be held. As of Friday afternoon, Saginaw Valley State owns a one-match lead over the Lakers, Northern Michigan, and Hillsdale. GVSU still has a chance to host the GLIAC Tournament, provided it defeats both Upper Peninsula schools this weekend and other teams lose their contests. The first-round match will take place on Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m., but again no locations have been set until this weekend's matches are complete.
On Saturday afternoon, the Lakers' four seniors will be honored prior to the match. GVSU will recognize Katey Crichton, Kaity Gormley, Whitney Tremain, and Meredith Young for their accomplishments and efforts over the past four seasons.
