Oct. 20, 2008

Bay City, Mich. - Senior middle blocker Danielle Alexander was honored by the GLIAC on Monday (Oct. 20) as the North Division Player of the Week, as she led the Lakers to three victories at the GLVC-GLIAC Crossover Tournament. GVSU won a pair of matches over top-25 opponents and Alexander led the Lakers in both kills (42) and blocks (15) over the weekend. It is the second time this season and fifth time in her career she has been named the league's player of the week.

Alexander helped Grand Valley State to four-set victories over #24 Indianapolis and #21 Northern Kentucky on Friday (Oct. 17), pushing its record to 5-2 this season against ranked opponents. The Lakers swept Bellarmine, 3-0, on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 18) for their 18th consecutive victory and a 21-2 overall mark.

In a 3-1 win over Indianapolis, the fourth-seed from the GLVC, Alexander totaled 16 kills and only three errors for a .382 hitting percentage. She added four digs, two assists, two total blocks, and a service ace.

Later in the day, the Lakers dropped second-seeded Northern Kentucky by the same 3-1 score. Alexander provided 14 kills, one attack error, and a .464 hitting percentage. She tallied eight block assists and four digs in the win.

She finished off her strong weekend with 12 kills and a .500 hitting percentage, to go along with five block assists and five digs, in the sweep over Bellarmine.

For the weekend, Alexander recorded 42 kills, 15 total blocks, a .439 hitting percentage, 13 digs, and a pair of service aces.

Alexander ranks second in the GLIAC in points (4.10), third in blocks (1.22), fifth in hitting percentage (.332), and seventh in kills (3.13). Her 91 block assists rank second in the conference.

After five straight matches away from home, the Lakers return to GVSU Fieldhouse Arena for a non-conference match against Aquinas on Wednesday (Oct. 22) at 7:00 p.m. Grand Valley State has won 27 consecutive home matches, which is three wins shy of tying the longest such streak in school history.
