Bay City, Mich. - Senior middle blocker Danielle Alexander was honored on Monday (Sept. 29) as the GLIAC North Division Player of the Week, as she helped the Lakers to a pair of road conference victories over the weekend. This is the fourth time in her career that Alexander has been named the league's player of the week and the first time this season.
Alexander led GVSU to league wins at Saginaw Valley State and Lake Superior State last weekend, pushing the Lakers' record to 14-2 overall and a perfect 7-0 GLIAC mark. Grand Valley State has won 11 consecutive matches.
In a 3-1 win over the Cardinals on Friday (Sept. 26), Alexander put together perhaps the best statistical match of her career. She tallied 20 kills with zero attack errors for a terrific .455 hitting percentage. Alexander followed up that performance by adding six kills and one attack error for a .556 attack clip in a 3-0 win at Lake Superior State.
For the weekend, she hit .472 with 26 kills and one attack error. Alexander led the Lakers in kills and blocks, with nine block assists.
Alexander ranks in the top-10 in the GLIAC in several categories, as the senior is third in points (4.14), fifth in blocks (1.20), sixth in kills (3.13), and seventh in hitting percentage (.322). Her 67 block assists lead the league.
This is the second player of the week award that Grand Valley State has earned this season. On Sept. 8, sophomore middle blocker Rebeccah Rapin was named the North Division Player of the Week.
The #8 Lakers return to GVSU Fieldhouse Arena for a pair of matches this weekend. Grand Valley State takes on Findlay on Friday (Oct. 3) at 7:00 p.m. and Hillsdale on Saturday (Oct. 4) at 4:00 p.m. GVSU has won 25 consecutive home matches, the second-longest streak in school history.
