Bay City, Mich. - Grand Valley State was selected to finish in a tie for first place in the GLIAC North Division, as was released by the conference offices on Tuesday (Aug. 24) in the GLIAC Preseason Coaches' Poll. The Lakers, after a 16-13 season in 2009 in which they advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the 10th straight year, are picked to finish tied for first with West Michigan rival, Ferris State.
In a ballot amongst the league's head coaches, GVSU and FSU were picked to top the conference's North Division, with the Lakers earning three of the six first-place votes and the Bulldogs garnering a pair of first-place citations. Both teams tied with 32 points. Northern Michigan picked up the other first-place vote and finished third with 24 points. Saginaw Valley State (23 points) and Michigan Tech (17) were slotted fourth and fifth, while Northwood (13) and Lake Superior State (6) rounded out the sixth and seventh-place schools.
The South Division featured defending GLIAC Champions, Hillsdale, earning six of the seven first-place votes and sitting atop the division with 36 points. Wayne State garnered 27 points and sits in second place, one point and one slot ahead of Ashland (26 points). In fourth place, Findlay totaled 24 points and the other first-place vote. Ohio Dominican (13), Tiffin (12), and Lake Erie (9) are ranked fifth, sixth, and seventh in the South Division.

Grand Valley State returns 10 letterwinners and four starters from the 2009 team that placed 11-5 in the GLIAC and finished second in the North Division. The Lakers open up their season at the University of Tampa Tournament on Sept. 3-5. GVSU faces #1 Concordia-St. Paul on Friday (Sept. 3), takes on #5 Central Missouri and #13 Nebraska-Kearney on Saturday (Sept. 4), and finishes with #3 Tampa on Sunday (Sept. 5).
