Allendale, Mich. - Grand Valley State seniors Chara Fehsenfeld and Carly Miller earned All-American honors for their play in the 2002 season. Fehsenfeld was named to the Verizon Academic First Team All-American team for the second straight year while Miller earned Daktronics Second Team All-American plaudits for the first time. The two seniors led GVSU to a school best 32-3 overall record, the NCAA Final Four for the second straight season, and their second GLIAC Championship in the last three years.
Fehsenfeld recorded a 3.99 GPA in biology at Grand Valley and is the first Laker to earn Verizon First Team All-American honors twice. Chara was also named a Second Team All-American after her sophomore season in 2000. In 2002, Fehsenfeld led the Lakers with 3.82 digs per game and also recorded 1.72 kills per game with a career high .300 attack percentage. Fehsenfeld became the fifth Laker to record 1,000 kills and digs in a career and finished her time at GVSU second in career digs with 1,498.
Miller is the second Laker to earn Daktronics All-American honors, with Kathy Vis earning the school's first honor in 2000. Carly led GVSU with 4.40 kills per game and a .326 attack percentage. Miller set the GVSU career kills record with 2,154 and finished second in hitting percentage with a .331 all-time mark. Carly was also named an AVCA First Team All-American for the second straight season.
