#8 Grand Valley State continued its winning ways, dominating Wayne State, 3-0 (30-13, 30-20, 30-19), Friday night at the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena. The Lakers extended their winning streak to 16 straight matches and improve to 21-2 overall and 11-0 in the GLIAC. Wayne State falls to 8-11 overall and 3-8 in GLIAC play. GVSU will host #10 Hillsdale on Saturday, Oct. 13 at 4:00 p.m. Tomorrow's match will feature two top 10 teams in the nation and the only two undefeated teams left in the GLIAC.
The Lakers started out strong, going ahead 8-3 and then pushed their lead to 17-10. GVSU then scored the next seven straight points to just out to a 24-10 lead. Wayne State scored one point, but once again the Lakers went on a 5-0 run to take a 29-11 lead. GVSU closed out the game three points later to win the first game, 30-13. The Lakers hit .394 as a team, while Wayne State hit just -.108 and tallied only four kills in the game.
Game two began the same way with GVSU going ahead 10-4. The Lakers went on a 7-3 run to go up, 17-7 and then took a 20-10 lead. GVSU went up by 13 points, 23-10, but Wayne State scored four straight points to make the score 23-14. The Lakers didn't give in, however, and kept at least a nine point lead the rest of the way. The Lakers won game two by a 30-20 margin. Wayne State hit just -.043 in the game, while the Lakers posted a .260 hitting percentage.
GVSU looked to close out the match by starting off game three with a 10-5 lead. The Lakers went on a 8-5 run to increase their lead to 18-10. The Warriors cut the lead to seven points, 21-14, but the Lakers went on a 3-0 run to take a 25-15 lead. Wayne State scored the next two points and then GVSU tallied the next four to take a 29-17 lead. The Warriors posted the next two points, but GVSU closed out the game and the match with a 30-19 game three win. GVSU hit .286 in the final game, while Wayne State hit -.023.
Grand Valley State recorded 54 kills, seven team blocks, and a .304 hitting percentage, while Wayne State posted just 19 kills and a -.055 team hitting percentage.
