Grand Valley State defeated West Texas A&M, 3-0 (31-29, 30-26, 30-23) in its first match of the 2004 Radisson Riverfront Classic held at the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena. The Lakers will play Wheeling Jesuit at 7:00 p.m. Friday.

GVSU tallied a .258 attack percentage, while holding West Texas A&M to just .167. The Lakers were led by junior Lauren Hanson who hit .421, while recording 18 kills, 38 total attacks, and four assisted blocks. Junior Tracy Kirk tallied 14 kills and a .333 attack percentage, while senior Stephanie Maciasz-Dow added 10 kills, and three digs. Senior Leah Kunz posted 38 assists and junior Michele Ehrlich added 10. Sophomore Molly Young recorded a team-high 20 digs and junior Tina Tromblay added 13 and three assisted blocks.
