Grand Valley State won its first match of the 2003 season by defeating Adams State, 3-0, at the Lady Buff Classic in Canyon, Texas. The Lakers won 30-22, 30-22, 30-24.
GVSU was led by freshman outside hitter Megan Helsen, who had 12 kills, 27 total attacks, seven digs, and two service aces. Senior Sabrina Bird tallied 10 kills, 16 total attacks, three blocks, and three aces. The Lakers other senior, Nicole Bayle, recorded 33 assists, three kills, and four digs for GVSU.
The Lakers will continue play in the Lady Buff Classic by playing Eastern New Mexico at 4:00 p.m.
