Grand Valley State fell, 3-2, to Nebraska-Omaha in its season opener on Friday at the University of North Alabama Classic in Florence, Ala. The Lakers will play North Alabama at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.

Nebraska-Omaha won game one, 32-30, but the Lakers came back to tie the match up at a game a piece after winning game two, 30-24. GVSU forced Nebraska-Omaha to committ 15 errors and record a -.114 attack percentage in game two. The Lakers took a 2-1 game lead after winning game three, 30-27. Nebraska-Omaha came back, however, winning game four, 30-25, and game five, 15-13.

GVSU tallied 10 total blocks, seven service aces, and forced Nebraska-Omaha to hit .129 for the match, but it wasn't enough to seal the win.

Junior middle blocker Lauren Hanson led the way for the Lakers, tallying 11 kills, a .435 attack percentage, and three assisted blocks. Senior setter Leah Kunz recorded 41 assists and nine digs, while junior outside hitter Tina Tromblay had a team-high 13 kills and 15 digs. Senior outside hitter Stephanie Maciasz tallied 10 digs and two assisted blocks and junior middle blocker Tracy Kirk added nine kills and four assisted blocks.
