New Orleans, La. - The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) named Grand Valley State's women's track and field team Scholar Team of the Year in Division II for the 2010 outdoor season on Monday (Aug. 2). The Lakers earned the highest-placing team with at least a 3.00-cumulative grade-point average at the most recent NCAA outdoor championship.
GVSU claimed 47 points at the NCAA Outdoor Championships for a third place finish. Monica Kinney led the way for the Lakers recording 13 points. She crossed the finish line second in the 1500-meter run and placed fourth in the 5000-meter run. Liz Murphy claimed a second place finish in the hammer throw, while Chanelle Caldwell notched a third place finish in the 800-meter run.
Grand Valley State also joined 67 institutions on the Division II All-Academic Track & Field Teams for the teams cumulative GPA of 3.20.
