GVSU Women In First Place At GLIAC Championships After Day One With 61 Points

University Center, Mich. - Grand Valley State turned in a solid first day of competition at the 2003 GLIAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships with 61 points. Hillsdale is in second place with 50 points. Competition will come to an end Saturday at Saginaw Valley State University.

Kati Smith was able to get the Lakers going early with a GLIAC title in the pole vault. Smith vaulted 11-0.25 to claim first place honors, while teammate Nikki Peck was sixth with a vault of 10-4.25. Jeannette Seckinger turned in a second place finish in the 10,000 meter run with a time of 36:45.55, while Stephanie Sliwinski was fourth in a time of 38:35.01. Leanne Budde was second in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a clocking of 11:13.30, while Megan Doerr was third in 11:20.34. Julie Martin finished sixth in a time of 11:53.18. Pam Treppa claimed a second place finish in the triple jump with a jump of 35-07.75. Becky Myers claimed a fourth place finish in the hammer throw with a toss of 152-2 and Jen Spindler claimed a fifth place finish in the javelin (108-10).

Day two will conclude Saturday at Saginaw Valley State University with GVSU looking for a sweep of the 2002-03 cross country and track & field titles.
