University Center, Mich. - Grand Valley State turned in a solid first day at the 2003 GLIAC Indoor Track & Field Championships and have a 21 point lead heading into the second and final day. GVSU finished with 61.3 points, while Ashland followed with 40.3 points and Saginaw Valley State's 29.5.

GVSU claimed one title on the day, finishing first in the 4x800 relay with a time of 9:02.82. The Lakers placed four among the top six in the 5000. Leanne Budde was second (17:51.92), followed by Stephanie Sliwinski in third (18:05.52), Megan Doerr in fourth (18:13.86), and Jeanette Seckinger in sixth (9:02.82). Icis Charles was second in the long jump (19-6.25), while fellow Laker Erin Miller was fourth (17-2.75). Leanne Lowe was second in the high jump (5-5.25), while Becky Myers was third in the weight throw (53-2).

Grand Valley State, the three-time defending GLIAC Indoor champions, will look for their fourth staight title on Saturday as several Lakers turned in stellar performances in the Friday prelims.
