Grand Valley State opened the 2005-06 Indoor Track and Field season at home on Friday in the GVSU Holiday Open. The Lakers recorded five NCAA Qualifying marks in the season opener. GVSU will return to action as they host the Mike Lints Laker Challenge on Jan. 20 at 4:00 p.m.

Senior Mandi Zembra broke the school and track record as she recorded an NCAA Qualifying time of 16:53.29 in the 5,000 meter run. The previous record of 17:06.61 was set by Krista O'Dell in 2003.

Sophomore Karlie Singleton (17:18.76) and freshman Laura Aderman (17:57.44) both set qualifying times in the 5,000 meter run as well as they finished in second and third place, respectively. Junior Rachel Duthler took sixth place in pole vault, recording a qualifying height of 11-06.00, while Lindsey Jones finished in seventh place with a qualifying mark of 11-06.00 as well.

"This was a solid season opener for our student-athletes," said head coach Jerry Baltes. "We had some veterans perform at a very high level to open up the season, but we also understand we have a lot of work to do in order to reach our goals this season."

"Mandi was impressive again in picking up where she left off from a season ago," added Baltes.
