Grand Valley State began the home portion of its indoor track and field schedule with the GVSU Holiday Open on Saturday. The Lakers had strong performances on both the men's and women's side. GVSU will return to action on Friday, Jan. 14 as they host the Eubanks Open beginning at 5:00 p.m.

For the women, junior April Szatkowski won the 200 meter dash with a time of 26.11, while sophomore Liz Shinn took second with a 26.54. Sophomore Katie Mandziara (59.15) and junior Ashley Thomas (59.23) finished in first and second place respectively in the 400 meter dash, while senior Stephanie Kuhlmam (2:16.60) and sophomore Brandi Murell (2:23.05) took first and second in the 800 meter run. Junior Rae Russell won the 3000 meter run with a time of 10:58.95, freshman Karlie Singleton placed first (17:44.53) and senior Krista O'Dell took second (17:59.50) in the 5000, and sophomore Jennifer O'Shesky won the 55 meter hurdles, finishing in a time of 8.39.

In the field events, junior Pam Treppa took first in the triple jump (36-04.25) and sophomore Morgan Acre won the weight throw with a mark of 16.81m.

On the men's side, junior Kenny Coleman won the 400 meter dash with a time of 49.57, sophomore John Collins (1:55.74) placed first in the 800 meter run, and senior Don Wilkins (14:21.21) and freshman Nate Peck (14:33.42) finished in first and second place in the 5000 meter run. Leading the way for the Lakers in the field events was sophomore John Ybarra who won the shot put with a mark of 16.35m.
