ALLENDALE, Mich. - The defending national champion Grand Valley State women's track and field team was back at it on Friday (Nov. 30) night, hosting the GVSU Laker Early Bird at the Kelly Family Sports Center.
The squad had a strong showing, coming out of the meet with 11 NCAA Division II provisional qualifying marks, mostly thanks to the women's distance runners.
Five Lakers hit provisional qualifying marks in the 5,000 meter run, while another pair of Lakers hit provisional marks in the 3,000 meter run.
Sophomore Allyson Winchester (Wayland, Mich./Middleville) led the way in the 5,000 meter run, coming away with a second-place finish with a time of 16:49.96, well below the provisional mark (17:35.00) and nearing the automatic qualifying mark (16:36.61).

A pair of provisional qualifying marks also found their way to the throws area, where senior Jamie Smith (Hickory Corners, Mich./Gull Lake) won the event with a provisional qualifying mark of 18.13 meters. Junior teammate Alyssa Zokoe (Coopersville, Mich.) finished second with a qualifying mark of her own at 17.57 meters.
The final provisional mark of the day came in the 4x400 meter relay, where the team of junior Lisa Galasso (Orion, Mich./Lake Orion), sophomore Brittney Banister (Flint, Mich./Carman-Ainsworth), junior Andrea Kober (Conklin, Mich./Sparta) and Franklin combined for a third-place finish in a time of 3:54.65, just under the Division II provisional qualifying time.
Other top finishes for the Lakers included a second-place finish by Franklin in the 300 meter dash (41.07) and a second-place finish by junior Alisha Weaver (Dimondale, Mich./Holt) in the high jump (1.61m).
Senior Jennifer Fuller (Sturgis, Mich.) tied teammate Weaver with a height of 1.61 meters in the high jump, but took an extra attempt to clear that mark and finished third. Also taking home third-place finishes were Banister in the 300 meter dash (41.58) and Kober in the 600 meter run (1:36.32).
The Lakers will have next weekend off before hosting the GVSU Holiday Open at 3:00 p.m. at the Kelly Family Sports Center on Friday, December 14th.
