Walnut, Calif. - Grand Valley State University finished the NCAA Outdoor National Championships with 36 points overall, placing them eighth. The Lakers were helped by second place finishes from Katherine McCarthy and Candice Wheat. McCarthy scored eight points in the 800-meter run, while Wheat added eight of her own in the 100-meter hurdles.

McCarthy finished the 800 in 2:09.90 to pick up the eight points, while Wheat cleared the hurdles in just 13.63 seconds. Her time was just 0.34 seconds behind the winner, Kirby Blackley from Findlay.

Mary Bogner added another four points to GVSU's total, earning fifth place in the javelin throw. Bogner's final throw went 144'4", which put her almost two feet ahead of sixth place. Heather VanderSlik almost picked up another point for the Lakers when she cleared 5'7" in the high jump. She finished ninth, as the eighth place finisher cleared the same height in one less attempt.

Grand Valley had three qualifiers in the 1500-meter run, and they finished right next to each other. Kelly Gibbons was the only one to score, as she finished eighth and earned one point. She finished in a time of 4:34.46, while Rebecca Winchester was ninth at 4:35.26 and Katie Alfredson was 10th at 4:35.47.
