San Angelo, Tex. - Grand Valley State's women's track and field team notched a fourth-place finish at the NCAA Division II Track & Field Championships in San Angelo, Texas on Saturday (May 23). The Lakers compiled 39.50 points and received scoring from nine different athletes, including three top-three finishes.
Lincoln took home the team title with 85 points, while the host school Angelo State finished in second place with 82 points. UC-San Diego was third with 56 points, while GVSU held off St. Augustine's, which tallied 38 points and a fifth-place finish.
In Saturday's final events, two Lakers finished in third place in their respective events. Junior Candice Wheat used a time of 13.48 in the 100 meter hurdles to finish third and score six points for GVSU. Freshman Monica Kinney also added six points to the Lakers' score with a time of 4:31.41 in the 1500 meter run.
Junior Katherine McCarthy was fourth in the 800 meter run at 2:12.20, good for five points. Fellow junior Maegan Doyen totaled a fifth-place finish in the high jump with a jump of 5'8.5" (1.74 meters). That earned Grand Valley State four points. In the same event, senior Heather VanderSlik jumped 5'6" (1.68 meters) to tie for eighth place and score half a point. Sophomore Megan Maceratini placed eight in the 5000 meter run with a time of 17:07.31, scoring a point for the Lakers.
The successful final day for GVSU followed a productive Friday in which three GVSU athletes scored points. Senior Dianna Noonan jumped 13'3" (4.04 meters) in the pole vault for a second-place finish and eight points. Freshman Jocelyn Kuksa placed fifth and brought home four points in the pole vault with a leap of 12'7.25" (3.84 meters). Lauren Buresh was fourth in the shot put with a throw of 46'11.75" (14.32 meters), scoring five points for Grand Valley State.
