Grand Valley State men's and women's track and field teams got off to a solid start at the the 2005 GLIAC Championships Friday hosted by Saginaw Valley State. The Lakers recorded three individual and one team title. GVSU's men are in first place with 82 points, while the women are in second with 34.  They are 14 points behind first place Ashland (48).  The Championships will conclude on Saturday with field events beginning at 11:00 a.m.

Junior Adrian Chouinard claimed the GLIAC title in the 5,000 meter run, recording an NCAA Provisional time of 17:42.40. Freshman Karlie Singleton finished right behind her in second place (17:51.17), while freshman Stacey Kandas placed seventh in a time of 18:41.00. The women's distance medley relay team of junior Mandi Zemba, senior Kristen Kulczycki, sophomore Brandi Murell, and senior Krista O'Dell set a new Fieldhouse record, winning the conference title in a time of 11:49.32.

In the field events, sophomore Morgan Acre captured a second place finish in the weight throw with a NCAA Provisional mark of 56-08.00. Sophomore Jennifer O'Shesky placed third in the long jump (17-08.50), while junior Pam Treppa took fifth place with a jump of 17-04.75. Sophomore Meredith DeVries finished in fourth place in the high jump (5-02.25) and freshman Katy Kern recorded a seventh place finish (5-02.25).


 

 

On the men's side, the Lakers had four of the top five finishers in the 5,000 meter run. Senior Ryan Cole notched the GLIAC title, setting a Fieldhouse record with a time of 14:27.73. Freshman Nate Peck finished in second, running a NCAA Provisional mark of14:37.02, senior Don Wilkins took third place, also posting a NCAA Provisional time (14:38.62), and junior Blake Terhuneplaced fifth with atime of 15:07.35. The men's distance medley relay teamof sophomore Jake Lombardo, freshman Trent McCloskey, junior Mike Salisbury, and freshman Ben Tolman placed fifth with a time of 10:40.43.

In the men's field events, senior Kirk Manchip captured the GLIAC title in the long jump, posting a NCAA Provisional mark of 23-06.50. Junior Joe LeFevre took sixth place (22-03.00), while junior Kenny Coleman finished in eighth place (22-02.50). Sophomore Mike Stowe placed third in the high jump, recording a mark of 6-07.50, while junior Brian Beach finished in second place in the pole vault (15-11.00). Sophomore Nick Natale placed second in the weight throw with a NCAA Provisional mark of 60-05.50 and sophomore Charles Smith finished third, also throwing a NCAA Provisional mark (59-00.50)

Eight men's and eight women's running events and three women's and two men's field events will take place on Saturday. Grand Valley State is the five-time defending GLIAC Champion on both the men's and women's sides.
