Allendale, Mich.-- The Lakers recorded eight first place finishes and set two school records at the DII Challenge hosted by Saginaw Valley State on February 8. Icis Charles claimed the 60 meter dash with a time of 7.53, earning an automatic bid to Nationals. Ashley Thomas earned a spot at Nationals by finishing third in the 400 meter dash with a time of 57.35.
GVSU took four of the top five spots in the mile run, with Krista O'Dell leading the Lakers with a first place time of 4:57.42, earning her a place at the National meet along with teammate Shannon Antvelink who finished second (4:58.83). Mandi Long took fourth (5:08.91), and Natalie Ewing (5:10.32) claimed fifth place for Grand Valley.
Stephanie Kuhlman claimed the top spot and a bid to Nationals in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:08. Teammates Krista O'Dell and Shannon Antvelink took second and fourth, respectively, posting times of 2:14.30, and 2:19.93. Alexandra Baker took first place in the 60 meter hurdles, finishing with a time of 9.26.
Grand Valley also claimed the top spot in the 4x400 meter relay and a chance to compete at the National level, with Alex Baker, Sarah Warnke, Ashley Thomas, and Stephanie Kuhlman turning in a time of 3:53.22. The Lakers took the top spot in the distance medley as well, finishing in 13:20.26. Leanna Lowe took second in the high jump, recording a mark of 5'02". Kati Smith was the top finisher for GVSU in the pole vault, tying the school record at 10'6". Katie Wilkins finished third in the same event with a vault of 10'0".

Sarah Burgess claimed second place in the shot put, posting a mark of 40'11.5". The first place finish in the wieght throw was occupied by Becky Meyers, who threw 53'04" to claim the top spot for the Lakers.
