Allendale, Mich. - Grand Valley State won two events and posted four other top five finishes in the 2003 Smith Barney Invitational hosted by Butler University in Indianapolis. Becky Meyers hoisted a school record toss of 55'2" (16.86m) to win the 20# weight throw. Meyers upped her own school record by 10" and also improved her NCAA qualifying mark. Sarah Burgess won the second event for the Lakers finishing first in the shot put with a distance of 12.18m. Krista O'Dell hit the NCAA qualifying mark in the mile with a time of 5:03.87.
Freshman Ashley Thomas posted a second place finish in the 400 with a time of 57.86, while senior Icis Charles placed second in the long jump at 5.72m. Heather Whiteley earned a third place mark in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 9.54, while Steph Kulhman was fourth in the 800 finishing in 2:12.51, to improve her NCAA qualifying time.
Kati Smith tied a school record in the pole vault at the Lewis Invitational on Friday night. Smith hit 10'6" in the event to tie the mark set by Nikki Peck last weekend.
The Lakers will next compete in the DII Challenge on Saturday (Feb. 8) at Saginaw Valley State.
