Allendale, Mich. - Grand Valley State was impressive in the GVSU Open at the Fieldhouse Arena on Saturday. Steph Kuhlman and Becky Meyers both qualified for NCAA National competition and the Lakers won nine different events. Kuhlman qualified for the 400 as she won the event with a time of 57.16. Meyers won the 20 lb. weight throw with a distance of 53'5.5". Nicki Peck also set a new GVSU Indoor record in the pole vault with a height of 10'6" to finish second.
Senior Icis Charles won two events at the Red Simmons Invitational at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor on Saturday. Charles defeated a host of Division I competition in both the 60 meter dash and the long jump. Icis finished the 60 in 7.58 while jumping 18' 11.25" in the long jump, which are both NCAA provisional qualifying marks.
Other Lakers winning track events at the GVSU Open include April Szatkowski in the 200 (26.15), Shannon Antvelink in the 3000 (10:09.50), Alex Baker in the 55 hurdles (8.64) and the 4 x 400 relay team (4:01.72). GVSU also won three other field events. Leanna Lowe won the high jump (5'1"), Pam Treppa in the triple jump (34'1.5"), and Sarah Burgess in the shot put (40'6.5").
The Lakers will race at the Smith Barney Meet in Indianapolis on Saturday.
